As of August 2026, Ian has applied to become a become a member of the European Team Hub of the ‘Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature’ (GARN). This advocates for recognition of a ‘sentience’ of all of our ecosystems and biospheres – including their trees, oceans, animals, mountains and freshwaters.
This vibrant community is committed to defending and advancing the Rights of Mother Earth and is a global network of passionate Earth defenders, including organisations, Indigenous Peoples, activists, lawyers, and more, who share a common goal of recognising and protecting the Rights of Nature.

Ian has had a deep love of river ecology stemming from his passion for river fly fishing that goes back over 40-years. Linked to this, over the last 8-years he has volunteered as part of a nationwide ‘citizen science’ programme called The Riverfly Monitoring Initiative (RMI) run by River Fly Partnership linked to the Freshwater Biological Association.
From August 2026, Ian is also pleased to announce that as well as applying to become a member of the European Team Hub of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature he has also become an ‘Open Doors Member’ of the Society for Ecological Restoration .
